Chroma Key

Blue or Green screens are used in music videos in order to set the location and or create extra effects that otherwise would not be possible.

The reason for the frequent use of the Green is:

·      Green screen is cheaper.

·      Limit the cast.

·      Wider location choice.

·      More convenient (the cast and the staff don’t have to travel to different locations and waste time setting up the props etc).

·      The directors can focus on the narrative of the video or film and concentrate on the acting.

·      Noise control.

·      Lighting control.

·      Whether control.

·      Controlled area.

The point of the Green screen is to be able to represent emotions, genre, create a visual aesthetic and represent things that cant realistically be achieved.

Green screens have an important effect on music videos however the audience do not realise this. Green screens allow directors to put the artists in any location with any background that they desire at a low cost, green screens are easily accessible and also farely easily edited. Despite this the impact is still great as the green screen editing is un-noticable and creates a believable illusion for the audience. In order to edit the footage of the green screen the user has to have access to editing software such as premier pro, in premiere pro the chroma key option is selected and then edited to recognise the colour green so as to match the back ground of the footage. The green is then erased and replaced by another piece of footage that we want to incorporate into the video footage.
